Power Rankings: Pocono
June 3, 2003
10:43 AM EDT (1043 GMT)

Pocono. Probably the most unique track on the circuit.

Bobby Labonte remains on a tear -- keeping him on top of the Rankings. He's a three-time winner at Pocono, and all those victories have come since 1999.

On to business.

Biggest Gain this week: Ryan Newman (second straight week) up six spots

Biggest Drop this week: Jeff Burton, down six spots

Dropped out: Ward Burton (21), Jimmy Spencer (22), Dale Jarrett (23).

New this week: Jamie McMurray (19), Johnny Benson (22), Dave Blaney (24)

Week 14 of 36, Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway
Rank Prev Number Driver Comments
 1  1 Bobby Labonte Bobby Labonte He’s partying like it’s 1999.
2  5 Jeff Gordon Jeff Gordon Better send Sterling some Tennessee Vols merchandise as a peace offering. It won’t help, but it’s worth a shot.
3  2 Matt Kenseth Matt Kenseth At Dover, he qualified in the top 10 for the first time in his career. No, just kidding. But it was his first top-10 starting spot since last October.
4 10 Ryan Newman Ryan Newman Became just the second 200-pounder to win at Dover since 1991.
5  6 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Having the tight car can make all the difference.
6  3 Kurt Busch Kurt Busch He was upset after Roush Racing brought a short track car to Dover. Wait until he sees his restrictor plate for Sonoma.
7  4 Jimmie Johnson Jimmie Johnson He’s the best at driving a loose race car, but even he couldn’t save that one.
8  9 Rusty Wallace Rusty Wallace Beyond the Glory: Rusty Wallace premiered on Fox Sports Net this week. Included were hilarious shots of his hair in the 1980s and vaguely familiar shots of a black car in victory lane. C’mon, Rusty, change the scheme back. That thing was money.
9 11 Michael Waltrip Michael Waltrip He’s having a career year in the Winston Cup Series. Period.
10  7 Sterling Marlin Sterling Marlin After the race, Marlin was at Dover Downs playing slots when the No. 24 car barreled through the casino and knocked Sterling’s machine out of the way.
11  9 Kevin Harvick Kevin Harvick When told he was ninth in points, he probably replied, “That’s still better than Jeff Green, right?”
12 13 Terry Labonte Terry Labonte Brotherly Love -– some of Bobby’s good runs appear to be rubbing off on the old veteran. It’s like old times, except it was the other way around in the mid-1990s.
13 16 Tony Stewart Tony Stewart He’s had a frustrating year -– just like Rusty Wallace has -– and like Rusty, he’s going to sizzle in the second half.
14 14 Mark Martin Mark Martin After the race, his car made an appointment with its doctor to see if Viagra would be right for him.
15 20 Robby Gordon Robby Gordon He’s in the top 10 in the standings. What’s next? No Labor Day race at Darlington?
16 18 Ricky Craven Ricky Craven Dover’s his best track, which means Pocono isn’t.
17 15 Joe Nemechek Joe Nemechek SportsCentury: Joe Nemechek.
18 12 Jeff Burton Jeff Burton He kind of got into Jeff Gordon's way as the race wound down. Reckon Sterling called him late in the race, asked for a favor?
19 NR Jamie McMurray Jamie McMurray And Jamie McMurray pulls into victory lane at Pocono! Wait, there is an ARCA race this weekend, right?
20 17 Elliott Sadler Elliott Sadler Your teammate called. Said he’d meet you in the garage.
21 19 Greg Biffle Greg Biffle He hasn’t made every race this year, but he’s still higher in the standings than Dale Jarrett, Bill Elliott and Ricky Rudd.
22 NR Johnny Benson Johnny Benson He finished on the lead lap for the second time in 2003. And that’s counting the Late Model races he’s run.
23 24 Bill Elliott Bill Elliott In an intense battle for 21st place at Dover, he finished just behind teammate Jeremy Mayfield.
24 NR Dave Blaney Dave Blaney Four straight decent finishes. Two straight bad paint schemes.
25 25 Ricky Rudd Ricky Rudd Pocono should be a good indication as to how his second half will be.
