Kvapil forced to back-up after accident

October 2, 2004
01:21 PM EDT (17:21 GMT)

Travis Kvapil will start the American Racing Wheels 200 in a back-up truck after cutting a right front tire and hitting the wall in Turn 1 on the last lap in Friday's Happy Hour.

The team will run a chassis that scored a 27th-place finish at Texas and an eighth-place finish at Bristol earlier this season.

"I must have run over some debris," Kvapil said. "I wasn't doing anything to abuse my truck. I just cut the tire going down into turn one. I think that's the easiest place for something to happen -- running down low from the start to turn one. There's not a lot of room there.

"The chassis we'll be running is the closest we have to the one that I qualified in today, so I'm still optimistic about our chances. We came from the back in Michigan to claim the win, and I'm certain I can do it again tomorrow with stout Toyota power under the hood and good pit strategy from Eric Phillips and my Bang Racing team."
