Martinsville Speedway is the sixth stop in the Chase for the Nextel Cup, the 10-race playoff to crown the premier series champion.

Last year at Martinsville, Jimmie Johnson's series-high sixth victory of the season was overshadowed by word that a plane carrying 10 members of the Hendrick Motorsports organization crashed. Johnson and three other Hendrick drivers were informed of the crash after the race, and Johnson was excused from Victory Lane.
