This week's hot-button topic focuses on the Busch brothers, Kurt and Kyle. Older brother Kurt is on fire right now winning two of the last three races but Kyle is having a stellar season and will make the Chase for a second consecutive year. So, who is the better Busch brother behind the wheel -- Kurt or Kyle?
Read both sides of the argument and then weigh in with your take.

With all due respect to young Kyle Busch, this debate goes all the way back to childhood and the Castle Rock Court 500 -- the go-kart race in the cul-de-sac where the Busch brothers grew up. The only way Kyle, seven years younger, could beat big brother Kurt was to run over him from behind and render Kurt's go-kart useless. It's not that easy on the Nextel Cup circuit, where Kurt's experience and far greater level of maturity (now who would have thought we'd be saying that about Kurt a few years ago?) make him the superior driver over Kyle. Sure, Kyle might be a few spots ahead of him in the driver standings right now and lately has garnered more publicity because of his split with Hendrick Motorsports and his subsequent signing with Joe Gibbs Racing. But it's Kurt who is gaining the most momentum as they barrel toward the Chase for the Championship, having won two of the last three weeks in dominating fashion. For those keeping score at home, and not just at the old home in Castle Rock Court, that gives Kurt 17 wins in 243 career Cup starts -- the same number of victories Dale Earnhardt Jr. has registered in 278 career starts. Kurt, in other words, has won 7 percent of the Cup races he has entered. He also won the points championship in 2004. Taking those numbers a step further, Kyle Busch has one win this season and four in 101 career Cup starts. Even a journalist can do the math to deduce that he's won just under 4 percent of the Cup races he's entered. If he continues along roughly the same career path, he'll have right around 10 wins after 243 career races -- and Kurt will still be leading him by nearly twice as many wins and at least one championship. Big bro will be so far ahead that little bro won't ever catch up. • Joe Menzer, NASCAR.COM |
Kyle Busch has yet to win a championship like his older brother Kurt, 29, but he is still the stronger driver and I'm not the only one who will tell you that. Most of the NASCAR garage will as well, including his brother! Don't forget the time Kurt said on national television, before Kyle arrived on the scene, that "if you think I'm good, just wait until my younger brother gets here." Kyle is a better driver because no matter how small the space is on the track, Kyle will find a way through it; he's a fearless racer. He's more aggressive than Kurt and that's what separates the champs from the field fillers! Kyle doesn't ask for permission. Rather, the 22-year-old acts and asks for forgiveness later. And if Kyle could, he'd race Monday through Friday evident by his triple duty tour coming up at Bristol. After Michigan on Tuesday, the kid is heading right to Bristol for the Craftsman Truck Series event on Wednesday. Then he'll race in the Busch Series event on Friday before driving in the Cup show Saturday! Meanwhile, whatever free time Kyle finds between NASCAR weekends, he is in a Late Model car. He can't get enough. Stats may lean in Kurt's favor because he has more years on the track, he's older but that doesn't make him wiser. Kyle has had more success in a shorter amount of time. Kurt got his first Cup win at Bristol at age 23. Kyle was only 20 and holds the record for the youngest winner in Cup history and went on to win two races his rookie year! The record is three in a rookie season and it's not held by his brother Kurt. Last, they both have impressive stats in their first 100 races, but when you talk about Kyle and Kurt amongst their peers inside the garage, everyone perceives Kyle to be the most talented driver hands down. And ladies and gentlemen, perception is reality! • Raygan Swan, NASCAR.COM |
